Mount Surprise and the Lava Tubes

An incorrect fuel price on Petrol Spy resulted in us heading for Mount Surprise, I should have known it was an error as it was too good to be true, had I known we would have filled and stayed at Mount Garnet where the cheapest fuel is for many Kms around.

This incorrect fuel price did have a little benefit it allowed us to travel West in Highway 1 the premier highway in Australia  with a trip out to Georgetown.

I missed the sign to the better park at Mount Surprise and ended up in what could only be described as a rundown park where the new owners had little clue on what should have been in a caravan park, the direction people who use the park were given when they arrived is park where you want, and the sites were not well marked, (good thing they were not very busy), there were no lights at night to show where the amenities were, this park was a free for all.

On the day we were booked to go to the lava tubes where MM could not go, we were informed that that day due to the power company needing to replace a pole outside the park Mount Surprise (the whole town) would be without power! This was a problem for us as MM was to stay in the van with the aircon on while we were away, the park rules were “Strictly No Generators” and No dogs to be left alone (this one we were going to brake anyway as MM would just go to sleep with no one knowing she was there) what to do? We were honest with the park owners and told them our plans and asked that because the situation of on power to use the generator, (we had already checked with the only other van in the park at the time who said it was ok during the day and he would keep an eye on the van). We had the park’s  ok so out came the noise maker.

At the Lava tubes we had almost a private tour guide with the only others on the tour being two girls from France and Belgium traveling together so just a small group of four with a new guide, this encouraged a lot of conversation.
