Longreach
Longreach was always intended to be a catchup stop and to pick up Carol’s friend Marilyn for the feature of the trip “The 2025 Festival of Outback Opera” which starts in Winton, with no public transport directly into Winton the only way for Marilyn to join us was to fly into Longreach and travel with us on to Winton.
We had explored most of Longreach last year but ran out of time to see Captain Lightnings lookout, so that was on the list to see this year as well as a little rest from driving for me. The trip out to the lookout was attempted but at the turnoff there was a sign to say access was closed to the lookout, yet the road was not blocked, so the decision was made to see just how far we could go. With about 10Km to go we started to come across wet patches along side the road, this is in BLACK SOIL country so it did not look too good, the first crossing that was damp was ok but we soon came across one that was very wet, being alone and not having self-recovery gear at hand I wisely turned around with what looked like the lookout in sight.
Not to make this a totally wasted trip we decided to explore a track closer the beginning which was sign posted to the Lily Lagoon and made for an interesting diversion.
Later in our trip we were to return to Longreach for the Opera Ball, another interesting night to finish our festival.
