Venice
Our time at the villa has finally come to an end and it is time to move on, we take a local train from Lucca to Florence from there we booked our train to Venice, this while being an express train it is not like a High Speed train the 250 km still takes about two and a half hours.
When we arrive at the station in Venice (where the train terminates) we have already crossed onto the first island, the only one where there is any form of transport other than walking or travelling by boat, it is a short walk to the ferry that will take us to our Hotel (actually it is a pensione – a small hotel or boarding house)
After a short boat ride we arrive at the wharf just outside the pensione and to my horror it looks a little rundown and my fears grow when we go inside, the floors are not level the stairs look wonky no luxury here, we knew when we booked this place that we had to share some facilities, but this does not look good.
Venice is an expensive place to stay and this place was priced reasonably and need to be booked well in advance so we were stuck, it was only for three nights so we stayed, that it turns out was a real good decision, because what this place lacked in building polish it more than made up for in the way the staff treated the guests, the building had character but I will only give it 1 star as far as hotels go, the staff on the other-hand I will give 6 stars out of 5 as a result this place rates with the best hotels we had on this trip, and I would recommend it to anyone, its location was also ideal we did not have to carry our bags over any bridges unlike some other hotels.
Unfortunately the weather was changing, we had good weather up until now but it was now overcast and soon it would rain, not real heavy but what I call nuisance rain periods of dry followed by a shower or two, this made for a little uncomfortable sightseeing but did not prevent it.
Venice is about getting lost in the little alleys and discovering wonderful things after all you are never too far away unless you leave the islands by going over the causeway. There are many bridges crossing over the smaller canals and two main bridges over the main canal, the Academia and the Rialto so getting that lost you can not find your way home is hard!
