Pompeii
Finally to Pompeii – Yeah! We had a wonderful guide called “Wilma” who we picked up in Naples. Wilma said the most common question asked was “How long do you need in Pompeii?” to which she replies “Two days, But you only have two hours”
Wilma took us to where most of the tourists weren’t – Yeah – Italy would go broke without the tourists! Pompeii is everything it is meant to be plus more, I think I would need a week and Wilma as a private guide to see it all!
Through out Pompeii there are live dogs walking around, they don’t bark at you or come to you looking for food, they mainly sleep and mind their own business. I asked Wilma about the dogs – “While Zeus sleeps the dogs are quiet, when Zeus awakens so do the dogs and you get the hell out of Pompeii!” only one dog was ever found in Pompeii – it had been chained up and couldn’t get away.
Pompeii other claim to fame – according to Herman is the speed bumps for the chariots!- and you thought they were an invention of modern times – every thing old is new again!
Pompeii has always been on my “1000 things to do before you die” list, I have been there and it is back on my “1000 things to do before you die” to re-visit you really can not comprehend Pompeii until you see it and even then, when you are there trying to take in everything that happened, it becomes surreal
From Pompeii to Sorrento, along the way we passed some wonderful coastline of the “Bay of Naples” and some lovely little towns with ruins from Roman times and Medieval times.
Our hotel was on the southern side of Sorrento, very modern and big. We had a wonderful view from our room’s balcony, we could see back up the “Bay of Naples” and Mount Vesuvius was very a dominant feature in the horizon.
