Today as a group we decided to visit two of the Tuscany hill towns Siena and San Gimignano, these towns were first settled during the Etruscan civilisation  (c. 900 B.C. to c 400 B.C.) so they are well over 2,000 years old

Siena

“Siena” (traditionally “Sienna” in English) is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is the capital of the province of Siena.

The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.

This was our first stop, while this is an old town most of the building though old are not the original, most date to a much later time though you can see where older ruins have been reused to build later buildings. The one thing that does remain though are the very narrow streets, as a result only the residents of the OLD TOWN are allowed to bring their cars into it visitors need to park well outside and walk into the town.

Walking into town I feel was a bonus as it allowed us to “Feel” the town.

Unfortunately the Cathedral was undergoing restoration so was not at its most magnificent, and the town square was being prepared for one of the James Bond films
