On to San Gimignano
“San Gimignano” is a small Defensive walled medieval hill town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, north-central Italy. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several kilometres outside the town.
Once we left Siena we slowly headed back to the Villa stopping off at the 2nd town we were going to see that day arriving in San Gimignano in time for some lunch, we enjoyed some really tasty local food and for a tasty end to the meal we found a shop that served some of the most delicious gelato we have ever eaten there were many flavours to choose from.
Then we explored another one of these old hill-top towns. Here again like Siena the building are not as old as the town itself but many of the buildings reuse the ruins of older buildings incorporating the bits that remained standing into the walls of the new buildings, in some cases ruins of building that already incorporated other ruins have been used, (who says that recycling / repurposing is a new thing).
Like Siena the laneway are narrow and cars are restricted, this makes walking very safe, every effort has been made to keep the heritage feel with in the old walls of the town even making McDonalds fit in so no advertising that does not fit into their window, in-fact I did not see any Neon Light type advertising anywhere in town, only that sort of advertising that fits into the medieval character of the town.
