The trip from Barcelona to Valencia
Having arranged to meet Belinda, a friend who lives in Barcelona, who we arranged to give a lift to Valencia for Marilyn’s birthday party, we proceeded to Avis and our car.
I had purchased the European Maps for my Navman in Australia and preloaded the addresses of our hotels and the airport in Lisbon before we left Australia so we were all set, or were we?
In Australia I have used the Navman to help explore new ways to go to places I know using the options for each trip, Fastest, Most Economical, Easiest and Shortest, this has worked well taking me off the beaten track.
In Spain the shortest proved on this trip to take us well of the beaten trip on to unknown back roads on which I felt uncomfortable, driving on the right-hand side of the road, this was to prove not the only lesson I learnt about using a GPS in Europe as we found out in Valencia.
The trip apart from being on real back roads proved mostly uneventful right up to the last few 100 meters, and my next lesson on GPS use luckily we had Belinda with us to ask where we should be going in Spanish.
Once in Valencia the approach to the accommodation was through narrow lanes with restrictions not know to the GPA maps, that was not the only problem, the lanes were so narrow it restricted the GPS from seeing the “Birds” that give it an accurate location so it was lost meaning we were lost in a maze of narrow lanes as we found out later we were only 100 meters from our destination.
Luckily we had Belinda and the address but NO paper map, Belinda offered to find the accommodation and then direct us but it meant we had to park the car in a lane that would allow a car to pass only one spot allowed that but it was a no parking zone so fingers crossed no ticket.
The address found using the shortest way (the wrong way up a one way lane) which we could not use Belinda then returned with a MAP and the correct directions finally we were able to park at the accommodation and move into our rooms. Here we meet up with the birthday girl herself.
