Along with the landscape of Tasmania, we are both interested in the history of the small state. So when I found out about an old mine site “Adamsfield”, I was interested to find out where it is located and try to visit the location.

This was not a gold or copper mine but Osmiridium for which until the opening of this mine Russia had an almost monopoly, but with the political upheaval in Russia there was a world-wide shortage, a new mining rush began against the trend in other mining areas in Australia.

There was a locked gate for the actual track into the mine site for which we could have applied to get the key, however I was told by Parks and Wildlife Tasmania that there was “Plenty of parking at the gate and only a 300m walk into the cabins that remained” this was not correct the walk was more like 3km, and the track hard to find with no parking at the gate.

As we originally drove past the mining track we continued through, (though, we were told we would find a locked gate before the end of the road) as far as we could go before it appeared the information was again incorrect, there was no locked gate and we could go right to the end to get a view of Boyes Basin in the north of Lake Gordon which is almost at the northern end of the lake.

We did eventually find the mine site track but as I said above it was more then a 300m walk.
