Arno Bay

Leaving Cowell I headed down the east cost of the Eyre Peninsula thinking that finding spots along the coast would be easy, Guess again for some strange reason unlike the Yorke, the Eyre was crowded and spots hard to come by, as the temperatures were still high I was opting for CP so I could use my AC, and quickly found that I needed to book ahead, something I had not planned on doing as this restricted my plans and tied me into a fixed itinerary not the flexibility I had hoped for when I planned this trip.

I was lucky enough to grab two nights in a small village like town, another holiday/fishing location ARNO BAY on the way stopping off to see Port Gibbon an even smaller hamlet, being surprised by coming across some interesting infrastructure from WW2

A sign accompanying the site reads as follows

Department of Defence Site

Igloos constructed during the second world war, to be used as Air Raid Shelters, Large Barracks and two for Radio Location Towers each 132 Feet high

Construction of the site was almost finished when Peace was declared, so the Towers and Sheds were sold in 1946

The towers being sold for £10 each

I must note that there is nothing other than Port Gibbon within about 20km from these Air Raid Shelters, and then for them to be constructed so late in the war, I wonder why?

There is not really any more to say about either Port Gibbon or Arno Bay if like me you are not a fisherman
