Wattle Point
I was going to stay in Yorketown but there are no “FREE CAMPS” in or near Yorketown so I have headed to Wattle Point just south of Edithburgh right on the coast. This is a pretty little spot with only two other vans nearby, at this point I do not know who they are as both cars are not were not around when I arrived. I set up for the first real OFF GRID test of the trip wondering if the batteries have recovered enough for me not to have to use the Honda (just in case I am at the other end of the camp site)
the rules for MM are reasonably simple she must be under effective control at all times (Not on the leash if controlled and in sight) so she has had a good run on the beach and is now tuckered out on the van.
The best way to find the campsite if to look for the ugly wind farm (I know people say they are needed and maybe so but that does not make them any less ugly, I much prefer the unspoilt beauty of this country
Travelling beyond the campsite on the dirt road brings me to Troubridge Hill with its brick light house built as late as 1980
which is surprising considering all of the ship wrecks along this part of the gulf.
Away from the windfarm we see what nature has to offer, well nature and the wheat farmers, a relatively flat area though I suspect that there was a lot of work to remove rocks to make it possible to plough as in many places there were great mounds of stone or they were used to create boundary fences, that is the farm side but nature comes into its own on the waterside with cliffs created by the waves and time and still happening
The closest village to the camp is Edithburgh with two pubs service stations a coffee shop and baker but little else in the way of shopping, for grocery shopping one need to go to a little bigger village (can not call them towns population is under 1,000 residents) Yorketown which is where the local council for the whole peninsula sits. Luckily this is not very far a 40Km round trip.
photos of the Villages on the peninsula will have their own gallery later.
To date my trip on the Yorke Peninsula has not disappointed and is proving to be very interesting even though I am not into Sea Food or Fishing for you that are that would be a bonus, though I am told that frequently it is the Fish Squid and Crabs that win the battle.
