Motril
Although its origin still remains unclear, Motril was a Phoenician enclave. It already existed in Roman times.
When the Christians conquered Motril, there were 2000 inhabitants who's main activities were agriculture, fishing and the production of silk and sugar.
Sugar was introduced into Motril by the Moors and we were able to see evidence of the sugar industry when we visited the museum in town, an old sugar mill that had been forgotten and only rediscovered when work on the site to clean it up uncovered the mill in place, it was then decided to keep what was found and make it safe for visitors.
