Leaving Milan by High Speed Train travelling through Switzerland and Germany, originally we were to go through to Amsterdam, but after communicating with my cousin, Alice, we were asked to meet her at Utrecht which was well before Amsterdam and easier for her and her husband John to meet us and take us to her home in Assen.
As Alice and John once lived in Utrecht and as it was not as busy as Amsterdam meeting each other was easy and travel by car much quicker.
The train trip was fantastic and we saw much of the beautiful countryside but as we were travelling at over 200 km per hour photography was not advised with the camera I had at that time as it was not quick enough to take “FREEZE PHOTOS” and they would have just been blurs, so not photos were taken some thing I regret now and something I can now do with my updated camera.
With my camera safely away Carol and I just relaxed for the long trip drinking in the sights.
When we arrived in Utrecht Alice and John were already waiting and we were soon on the last part of the day’s journey and we were soon made welcome in Alice’s home in Assen, and catching up with my Aunt we were later to catch up with Alice’s children in the morning!
As we were to be in Assen for a few days it was planned that the first day we would spend in Assen then go to the Hague or to use it “Sunday best “ name 's-Gravenhage and where I was born Scheveningen, on this trip my aunty was to join us and be our guide showing me not only the house where I was born but also some of the places where my parents lived before I was born. An emotional day for me as I had not been back since I left when I was only 4
There was also one day when no one was available to spend time with us and it was suggested that that was a good day to go and explore Amsterdam.
Our final day before our flight to Edinburgh we would travel the long way to Schiphol travelling past the Wiuwert church that had some natural Mummies, over the Afsluitdijk , through Edam-Volendam, before finally saying goodbye not only to our hosts at Schiphol but also the Netherlands!
