The Plan
This trip is very much in the early planning stage, I have booked my ferry to Tas and some early CP bookings as we arrive in peak tourist season and School holidays on this early map I have marked some places of interest and the roads I already plan to take, these by no means are final and the only places I will be going to.I will update the map once we have a firm plan or we are actually in Tasmania, so stay tuned!!!
Places suggested so far.
Hobart - worth a bit of time to explore this beautiful city, including to visit:
= the top of Mount Wellington, road is a bit windy for your van, suggest just taking your car = Battery Point and Salamanca Market (open on Saturday)
- Mount Nelson and the signal station
- Road between Sandy Bay and Kingston is very nice, with good views
South of Hobart
- Bruny Island is worth a few days, very pretty and relaxing place, travel to and from via the ferry at Kettering
- Kingston to Huonville via Gordon and Cygnet is very scenic and Cygnet may be worth a stay
- The drive from Huonville to Southport is also very nice, I recall there is camping at Southport for your van, but best to check
East and Northeast of Hobart
- The Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur are definitely worth a few days. I recall there used to be a great van park close to Port Arthur. Fortescue Bay is in the National Park there and has good basic camping, not sure about powered sites, need to book through the National Parks Service
- Richmond is a very scenic historic town and may be worth a stay, they have wonderful scallop pies in the Richmond Bakery and some interesting art/craft shops
- Maria Island is great, there is good basic camping, not sure about powered sites, need to book through the National Parks Service
- There are many great spots on the East Coast, top of the list is Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay, there are also many great coastal towns, including Bicheno, St Helens, and Swansea. A slow trip up the East coast is recommended, stopping along the way as your time allows. The East coast also has many great wineries and places to buy/eat fresh oysters (I recall one near Swansea).
Launceston and surrounds
- Is also a good city to explore, the Cataract Gorge is a nice place with a good chair lift ride. Around Launceston the Hollybank Reserve is a nice forest reserve, and the drive up the Tamar to Low Head and returning on the other side (bridge at Sidmouth) is good
Northwest and North
= My home part of Tasmania, I grew up at Preservation Bay, 2 kms West of Penguin. Many good spots, including Stanley, Dip Falls, Marrawah (West Coast).
- Cradle Mountain is a must
Penguin is a nice town (I'm a bit biased) and central to many attractions, the coastal drive (old highway) between Ulverstone and Penguin is scenic although narrow in places
- There are many nice areas south of Ulverstone/Devonport which are good to visit, including Gunna Plains, Sheffield and the lake at Lower Barrington Lake
West Coast
- Strahan, including Gordon River Cruise
- Queenstown
- Corrina (may have been burnt out in recent fires on the West of Tassie
